Archive Old WhatsApp Chats with Claude, Without Deleting Anything (2026)
A chat list with hundreds of old threads hides the few that matter. Ask Claude to propose what can be archived, check the list, and approve it. Nothing is deleted, and every chat can be brought back.

A bakery owner opens WhatsApp on Friday morning. Two customers are waiting for an answer, and they are somewhere between a hundred old delivery threads, a supplier from last spring and a group about a wedding that already happened.
Archiving the old threads by hand is a chore nobody gets to. With the Blueticks WhatsApp MCP connector, you can ask Claude to look at the list, suggest what can go, and archive only what you approve.
What can Claude do with your chat list?
The chats tool has five actions for this job:
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
list | Lists your chats. Each row carries the unread count, whether it is pinned or archived, and the time of the last message |
get_latest | The most recent chats that are not archived, pinned first, each with its latest messages |
archive | Archives one chat, which hides it from the main chat list |
unarchive | Restores one chat to the main chat list |
mark_read | Marks all messages in one chat as read |
list can keep only contacts, groups or channels, can attach the text of each chat's last message and who sent it, and can keep only chats active since a date. That date filter keeps recent chats, so it cannot find old ones. The list is newest first and comes in pages (skip and limit, with a total), so to find the oldest chats Claude has to page through the whole list. Archived chats are left out of the list unless Claude asks for them.
archive, unarchive and mark_read work on one chat at a time, using the chat id. For ten chats, Claude makes ten calls.
What do you need before you start?
A linked WhatsApp number in Blueticks and the connector added to Claude. If you have not done that, how to connect WhatsApp to Claude covers it. The connector URL is https://api.blueticks.co/mcp and you sign in with OAuth.
The engine connected to your account has to be online. The full tool list is in the WhatsApp MCP tools guide.
The prompt: propose first, archive after your yes
Do not ask Claude to "clean up my chats". Ask it to look first and change nothing until you have seen the list.
Using Blueticks, page through my whole chat list with people (no groups) until you have all of it, with the unread count and the time of the last message for each. Do not change anything yet. Check today's date, then show me the chats whose last message is more than 60 days old and that have nothing unread, with the name and the date of the last message. Wait for my yes before you archive any of them.
The result is a list you can read in a minute. Remove the ones you want to keep ("not the supplier"), then say yes. Claude archives them one by one.
The 60 days is an example. Change it to fit your inbox. Paging through a long list takes several calls, so expect it to take a moment. Claude decides from the date of the last message that it reads, so a chat that looks quiet may hold a message you care about. That is why the list comes first.
How do you mark chats as read?
Ask Claude to mark a chat as read once you have dealt with it, for example after you answered the customer from your phone.
Using Blueticks, mark the chat with Dana as read.
This marks all messages in that chat as read. Do it only for chats you have actually dealt with, since it clears the unread state for you.
How do you undo it?
Archiving hides a chat. It does not delete it, and the chats tool has no delete action. To bring a chat back, ask Claude to find it and unarchive it. Archived chats are left out of the list by default, so say "include archived chats" when you ask.
Using Blueticks, find the archived chat with the wedding group and unarchive it.
What can go wrong?
- The engine is offline. Check the engine status in Blueticks, reconnect WhatsApp, and ask again.
- The wrong chat. Claude works from the chat id. When two chats share a name, ask it to name the id it will use.
- A "quiet" chat that is not. The last message date is only a rough signal. Read the list before you say yes.
- A chat that still needs an answer. Archive hides it from the main list. Ask Claude to show you the chats with unread messages first, and leave those alone.
- A long list. Each chat is a separate call, so archive in batches of a few dozen and check the result.
Is it safe to let Claude change your chat list?
Archiving is reversible, which makes it a low-risk first thing to let Claude do. It still changes your real WhatsApp, so keep the review step. Anthropic's custom connector guide says that during Research, Claude can use connector tools without further approval, so do this in a normal chat instead. When Claude asks for approval, read what it is about to archive before you allow it, and avoid "Allow always" for a connector that can also send messages.
The line "wait for my yes" in the prompt is a request to Claude. In a normal chat, your approval of each call is what stops an action.
