WhatsApp Away Message vs an AI Reply: What Each Does at 11 PM (2026)
The WhatsApp Business away message sends one text you wrote in advance. An agent can answer the question the customer asked. Here is the line between them.

A customer writes at 11 PM: "Can you do Thursday? How much for two people?" Nobody is at the desk. What they get back depends on what you switched on.
Most owners start with the away message built into the WhatsApp Business app. It is a good first step. It also sends the same text to everyone, whatever they asked. This guide covers what the away message does, where it stops, and what an AI agent on your own number adds.
What does the WhatsApp Business away message do?
It sends one customizable message to customers who write to you, telling them you are busy or away. WhatsApp's own Help Center page on away messages describes it this way: customers who message you automatically receive a message saying you are busy or away from your phone, and you choose who gets it and when.
The setup, per that page, is short:
- Open the Tools tab and tap Away message.
- Turn on Send away message and edit the text.
- Tap Schedule and pick one of three options: Always send, Custom schedule (only during a period you set), or Outside of business hours. The last one only appears if you have set business hours in your business profile.
- Tap Recipients and choose from Everyone, Everyone not in address book, Everyone except…, or Only send to….
The page also notes that your device needs an active internet connection to send away messages.
Where does the away message stop?
It sends the message you wrote and nothing else. The Help Center page describes a customizable message with a schedule and a recipient filter. It describes nothing that reads the customer's question, asks a follow-up, or passes the chat to a person. So the 11 PM customer above gets the same line as someone who wrote "hello".
That is fine for some businesses. It is a gap for others:
| The customer writes | Away message | Agent with your instructions |
|---|---|---|
| "Are you open Saturday?" | Sends your fixed text | Answers from the hours you wrote |
| "Thursday for two people, how much?" | Sends your fixed text | Answers from your price rule, asks for the preferred time |
| "My order arrived broken" | Sends your fixed text | Replies, and hands the chat to you if you wrote a rule for it |
The right column is only as good as your instructions. An agent answers from what you tell it, so a question your instructions do not cover gets a vague answer or a hand-off. It is not a calendar. If the answer needs a live diary, a person confirms it in the morning.
What does an AI agent add?
An agent on your own number replies to the question that was asked, using facts and rules you write in plain words. On Blueticks you describe the agent in sentences: who it speaks for, what it can say, what it must not promise. Three details matter for after-hours use:
- It starts paused. A new agent sends nothing until you press Turn it on, so you can test first.
- You choose which chats it answers. The allow list is the default, and you can add a block list.
- A human can take over a chat. Write in the conversation yourself and the agent pauses for that contact. There is no timer, so it stays paused until you release it. The chatbot setup guide walks through the steps.
The agent also hands off on four built-in cases: a customer asks for a person, a billing dispute or a charge after cancellation, an account problem it cannot fix, or a confirmed defect that persists after troubleshooting. Rules you add can trigger more. Anything outside those can still get an answer from the agent, so read the first drafts closely.
Does an agent reply when your computer is off?
It depends on the plan, and this is the detail that decides whether the 11 PM message gets an answer. On Basic and Standard the agent runs through WhatsApp Web, so it replies only while WhatsApp Web is open on your computer. Pro works when you are offline. If most of your enquiries arrive at night, check the plans before you rely on a browser plan.
The away message has its own condition, from the Help Center page above: the device needs an internet connection.
When is the away message enough?
Use the away message alone when:
- Your after-hours messages are mostly "are you there?" and a promise to reply in the morning is the right answer.
- You get a handful of messages a week.
- A wrong answer would cost more than a slow one, so you want a person to answer everything.
Add an agent when the same questions repeat (hours, prices, availability, where to find you) and each one waits all night for an answer you could have written down once.
How do you try an agent without risking real customers?
Keep the away message as your safety net while you test.
- Restrict the allow list to your own test phone. Nobody else can trigger a reply.
- Write three or four rules. Hours, the price of your main service, what is booked by a person.
- Send it the real questions from a second phone. One it should answer, one it should not, one off-topic. Compare each reply to your instructions.
- Widen the list only after a clean run. Then turn the agent on for real customers.

FAQ
Can I turn on the away message and an agent at the same time?
We have not tested the two together on the same account, so we do not recommend it. Choose one for the after-hours window, and test with the away message off, or on a test phone only, so you know which message the customer received.
Does the away message answer the customer's question?
No. Per the WhatsApp Help Center, it sends a customizable message on a schedule you choose to the recipients you choose. It does not answer questions.
Will an agent get everything right?
No. It answers from your instructions and can be wrong when they are thin. Test it from a second phone, keep human takeover available, and keep it to routine questions at first.
Where do I set up the away message?
In the WhatsApp Business app: Tools tab, then Away message, as described in the Help Center.
