The street party is on Saturday. You have six phone numbers in a note, a name for the group, and a rule you want from the start: only you post announcements.
You can build it by hand, tapping through contacts one by one. Or you can tell Claude. With the Blueticks WhatsApp MCP connector, Claude can create the group, add the people, rename it, set who can post and write the description. The prompt below makes Claude show you the plan first, because creating a group adds real people.
What can Claude do with a WhatsApp group?
Claude uses the groups tool. It has four actions:
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
create | Makes a new group from a name and a list of phone numbers |
get | Reads a group by its id, with the member list if you ask for it |
update | Renames the group, sets its description, and sets who can post and who can edit the group info |
leave | Ends your own membership in a group |
The tool has no action for adding people to a group that already exists. Put everyone in at creation. If someone is missing later, add them in WhatsApp.
leave is flagged as destructive in the tool definition, and WhatsApp has no "delete group," so a group continues for anyone who is still in it.
What do you need before you start?
A linked WhatsApp number in Blueticks and the connector added to Claude. If you have not done that, how to connect WhatsApp to Claude covers it. The connector URL is https://api.blueticks.co/mcp and you sign in with OAuth.
This uses the groups tool. The full list is in the WhatsApp MCP tools guide.
Creating a group goes through your connected WhatsApp engine, so the engine has to be online.
The prompt: create the group, then lock posting
Paste this into a normal Claude chat and change the name and the numbers:
Using Blueticks, create a WhatsApp group called "Street party Saturday" with these numbers: +972501234567, +972507654321, +972509876543. Before you create it, show me the name and the numbers you will use, and wait for my yes. After it is created, show me the member list from the response and tell me if any number I gave is missing. Then set the description to "Saturday 16:00, bring a chair." Do not send any message to the group.
Behind it, Claude makes these calls:
- Pause. Claude reads the plan back to you and waits.
- Create.
groupsrunscreatewith the name and the numbers. The response comes back with the members listed. - Compare. Claude checks the member list against the numbers you gave.
- Describe.
updatesets the description, which can be up to 2,048 characters.
A sample answer, with invented numbers:
Created "Street party Saturday" Members: you plus 3 numbers, all present. Description set. Nothing was sent to the group.
Who can post in the new group?
The tool's notes say a new group starts with posting and editing limited to admins, which is WhatsApp's own default. Do not rely on that for a group where it matters. Ask Claude to set it: "after it is created, set posting to admins only." Claude sends that as update with the setting announce set to true. Then check the group settings in WhatsApp once.
To let everyone write, ask for it in the same prompt: "after it is created, open posting and editing to all members." Claude sends that as update with the settings announce and restrict both set to false. The reverse works too, and you can set one without the other.
If you want the group closed again later, tell Claude to set them back to true.
What if a number is missing from the group?
Check the member list in the create response. The tool returns it so you can confirm the group right away.
Your own number is not counted twice. If you include it in the list, it merges into the owner slot, and the member count already includes you.
If someone you listed is not in the response, say so to Claude and add them in WhatsApp. This tool cannot add them afterwards. Look for typos in the number first, since a wrong digit means a different person or no one at all.
Rename it, or change the description later
Ask in plain words: "Rename the group to 'Street party, final' and change the description to 'Saturday 15:00 now.'" Claude gets the group id from the create response, or looks the group up again, and sends update. The name can be up to 100 characters.
What can go wrong?
- The engine is offline. Creating a group needs your connected engine. Check the engine status in Blueticks, reconnect WhatsApp, and try again.
- A wrong number. Give each number with its country code, and read them back before you say yes.
- Two groups with the same name. Claude works from the group id. If you ask it to change "the group," make sure it names the id it will use.
- A large group. One create call takes up to 256 numbers.
Is it safe to let Claude create groups?
Creating a group adds real people and tells them about it. The same groups tool can also leave a group. Anthropic's custom connector guide says that during Research, Claude can use connector tools without further approval, so do this in a normal chat instead. When Claude asks for approval, read the action name and the numbers before you allow it, and avoid "Allow always" for a connector that can create groups and send messages.
The pause in the prompt ("wait for my yes") is a request to Claude. In a normal chat, your approval of each call is what stops an action.

Frequently asked questions
Can Claude create a WhatsApp group? Yes. With the Blueticks connector, Claude can create a group from a name and a list of phone numbers, after you approve the call.
Can Claude add people to a group that already exists? No. The tool can create, read, rename and update a group, but it has no action for adding members. Add everyone when you create it.
Who can post in the group Claude creates? The tool's notes say only admins, at first. Do not rely on it: ask Claude to set posting the way you want, to admins only or to everyone, and check once in WhatsApp.
Does it message the group? Not unless you ask. The prompt tells Claude not to send anything, and you approve each call.
How do I know everyone was added? Compare the member list in the create response with your numbers. Claude can do that for you and name any number that is missing.
